From idea to impact
The idea originated in 2023, when Alex spoke with his Ukrainian best friend about the challenges refugees faced in the Netherlands. Many found work, but often below their level. Engineers and IT specialists ended up working behind the cash register, while companies were desperate for talent. Something had to change.
Ukraine2Work started with a focus on finding suitable work for Ukrainian refugees. This has since been expanded to other status holders, and they work closely with various reception centres, the COA and social organisations.
The challenge: 10,000 people in the system
Ukraine2Work currently has around 300 refugees in its system, some of whom have already been matched with employers. All these candidates can match themselves to 300,000 vacancies in the Dutch labour market. It is difficult to determine how many matches have already been made. Alex estimates “several dozen”.
But the ambition is much higher: Alex wants to have 10,000 candidates in the database by the end of this year and ultimately help 1,000 people find a job.
This requires a snowball effect. Companies must be willing to give status holders a chance, and refugees must have access to the right tools and guidance. That is why Ukraine2Work organises recruitment days at reception centres and uses social media campaigns to reach and enthuse refugees.
AI and matching: the key to success
A crucial element in this process is 8vance’s AI matching technology. The system automatically matches candidates to vacancies based on their skills and experience. This makes it easier for employers to find the right people and for refugees to find a job that suits them more quickly.
Nevertheless, human contact remains essential. Alex and his team call candidates personally to complete their profiles and ensure they end up in the right place. Employers are also actively approached. Alex sees opportunities, especially among SMEs, where the need for staff is high. ‘Large corporations often work with regular suppliers, which makes it difficult to get in between. With SMEs, we can move faster.’
