AI connects volunteers and clients at Humanitas Rotterdam

How can technology help provide better support for vulnerable citizens in Rotterdam? Stichting Humanitas Rotterdam teamed up with 8vance in an innovative AI pilot. Instead of assigning volunteers randomly, smart matching technology is now used to connect people based on their talents and interests – directly aligned with the needs of clients.

From caring for to enabling care

Ramses van Rijn, Director of People & Organization at Humanitas Rotterdam, explains: “Care professionals are transitioning from hands-on support to a coordinating role. But many of our clients lack a personal network – about 40% don’t even have a contact person. That’s where we want to make a difference.”

Smart technology for human connection

8vance’s AI analyzes both the needs of the client and the strengths of the volunteer. “Our technology recognizes over 12,500 skills and can identify meaningful matches, even for people who’ve never considered volunteering before,” says Laurens Waling, Chief Evangelist at 8vance. “That makes volunteering more accessible and more impactful.”

A new perspective on wellbeing

The pilot helps community nurses see their clients differently. Not only in terms of medical needs, but also in ways to improve their wellbeing. That leads to more specific, personalized requests – and more fulfilling volunteer experiences.
